Knights Mourn Passing of Cardinal John Foley

Cardinal John P. Foley with Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson

Cardinal John Foley was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Council 4546 in Philadelphia. He joined the Knights in 1984 and was also a regular attendee of the annual Supreme Convention, giving the keynote address at the States Dinner in Quebec City in 2008.

Upon learning of Cardinal Foley’s passing, Supreme Knight Carl Anderson issued the following statement:

Cardinal John Foley was both a member of – and a great friend to – the Knights of Columbus and his presence among us will indeed be missed. His Eminence was always an excellent example of Christian witness. With my brother Knights, I witnessed this first hand during the years in which Cardinal Foley served as President of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, where he worked tirelessly to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ. In his capacity as president, we were honored to be able to work closely with him, sponsoring many of the initiatives and annual broadcasts of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications. It was an honor to be able to assist him for so many years in bringing the message of the Gospel from the Pope and the Vatican to the world. Both as President of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications, and later as Grand Master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem, Cardinal Foley provided us with an excellent example of what it means to be a tireless worker for the Lord. Though his presence among us will be missed, his memory will be cherished for many years to come.”
